Tom Roy

Tom Roy, principal of Thomson Roy Advisors, is a consultant based in Greenville, South Carolina and Shanghai, China. He works with business leaders and entrepreneurs in the US and China, both directly and in cooperation with a network of business, executive and organizational consulting firms in the US and China, to strengthen strategic leadership and international growth

For six years prior to founding Thomson-Roy, Tom led a global strategy development team for the Michelin Group, a European multinational corporation and world leader in the tire industry, with over 17 billion Euros in annual sales. He built a world-wide network that delivered analysis of rapidly changing environments for use in global strategic decisions. Just before retiring, he was a keynote speaker at the biennial Global Strategy Conference of the Group.

Tom has over twenty years of hands-on experience in Asia, managing business development, finance and legal operations. During that time, he led major investment projects worth over a half-billion dollars in China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia and India.

For over thirty years, Tom has engaged directly in crisis intervention and strategic risk prevention in the US, South America, Asia and Europe as a trial and international arbitration lawyer and corporate executive.

He has also taught strategic management to high-potential corporate executives and graduate business school students. For six years prior to returning to the US in 2007, Tom taught Strategic Management to business students at the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Tom is an advisor on doing business in China for the MBA Program, Graduate School of Management & Technology at the University of Maryland University College and will begin teaching in the graduate international MBA program at George Washington University in the spring of 2009. His recent article “Assessing and Managing Unconventional Risk in China” was published in Good Business, vol. 6, issue 1 (2008), by The Center for Ethics and Corporate Responsibility of the G. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University.

Tom has an undergraduate degree from Princeton University and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He is fluent in French and Portuguese.
