China has a reputation in the West that it is lax about environmental issues. While it may have been true in the past, there is increasing effort throughout China to get better control of the environment. There are many new environmental laws on the books and support for environmental issues is now an appraisal item for all government officials. Different regions have varying enforcement policies, but in all cases where a new factory is being built there is an environmental impact that is done.
